Peter Bien
England
Peter Bien (28 May 1930) is Professor Emeritus of English at Dartmouth College. His translations include works by Stratis Myrivilis, Nikos Kazantzakis, Yannis Ritsos, Stylianos Harkianakis, Constantine Cavafy, and Ange Vlachos.
Peter Bien professed British modernist literature at Dartmouth College for 36 years. Modern Greek literature and language is his sideline, chiefly because of marriage to a native Greek. He published translations of Kazantzakis’s The Last Temptation in 1960, Saint Francis in 1962, and Report to Greco in 1965. His translation of Myrivilis’s great anti-war novel Life in the Tomb came in 1977, done in part because of his own Quaker pacifism. Currently he is re-translating Zorba the Greek to replace the existing version in English, which was created from a French translation, not from the Greek original.
