“Niels Lyhne excellently translated”
Annelies van Hees wins Amy van Marken Translation Prize
On November 28th, the Amy van Marken Translation Prize will be awarded to Annelies van Hees for her translation, from the Danish, of Niels Lyhne by Jens Peter Jacobsen (original publication 1880). The Dutch translation was published last February by publishing house Wereldbibliotheek and was one of the 10 rediscoveries Schwob presented last summer.
Van Hees had wanted to translate this work for years. It is her son’s favorite book and it hadn’t been available in Dutch translation for over 60 years. The personal connection she feels with the book must have influenced her translation, as the jury deemed the translation ‘excellent’.
Schwob also had a special role in the publication of this book, as Dutch Schwob editor Alexandra Koch pitched the book at the publishing house.
