Schwob goes online

The launch of a project

This website is being launched in English on September 19 as part of an ambitious project to find and promote insiders’ tips about modern European literature. Schwob presents modern classics, cult books and must-reads that have not yet been widely translated.

The search is supported by a large network of translators, publishing houses, festivals and literature foundations who are suggesting titles and contributing sample translations, presented online with background articles and the possibility of purchasing the book.

Schwob pitches titles to publishers likely to be interested in purchasing translation rights and offers them information about funding. It also brings the published translations to the attention of readers - in cooperation with publishers, magazines, bookstores and libraries. At literary festivals in Marseille, Barcelona, Krakow and Amsterdam, for example, European authors will talk about their favourite Schwob titles.

Schwob will be presented in the next Frankfurt Book Fair at the Weltempfang on Friday 11th October, at 4pm.

All these titles will provide you with an impression of European quality literature in the 20th Century in all its diversity, they’ll enable you to make new references between literature, the history of regions and the ever-changing imagination in different parts of Europe during these last 100 years. From Galicia to the Transylvanian mountains, from aristocratic palaces to the suburbs of cities and battlefields of the various wars they open a spectrum of human dealing with the enormous changes this Century has dealt with and which created the situations we are living in now.

Schwob is a collaboration of literature foundations in Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium (Flemish), Poland, Wales and Catalonia, plus the Société européenne des auteurs (Finnegan’s List). The project is supported by the European Union. The website is available in English and Dutch and later in 2013 in Catalan, Polish, Finnish and Welsh.

Finnegan’s List: Each year a jury of 10 known authors creates a list of 30 titles they suggest to translate more widely. Within the Schwob project the Finnegan’s List organizes regular events where you can meet these authors and hear about the title suggestions. The events and the lists are being announced in the news section of this website.

Schwob is supported by the European Union and by all partners:
