Schwob / Finnegan’s List in Marseille

A New Schwob / FL Event on October 20

Marseille-Provence is one of the European Capitals of Culture in 2013. The French harbour on the Mediterranean will host the second Schwob/Finnegan’s List event, a top-notch literary talk with Israeli writer Etgar Keret, Christos Chryssopoulos from Greece and Serbian author Vladimir Arsenijević.

Cosmopolitan Marseille on the banks of the Mediterranean – a sea that is “a thousand things at a time”, to cite the French historian Fernand Braudel – will welcome three writers from Finnegan’s Lists past and present to speak on October 20 at the famous Théâtre de la Criée about their picks for Schwob/Finnegan’s List. A fascinating polyphony of cultures and languages where Etgar Keret will speak, among others, about the Israeli writer Orly Castel-Bloom and her classic Dolly City. In this book, the author describes the fears and aggressions of one of the most violent regions in our world. For Castel-Bloom, “Madness is a ripe orange, and therefore it should be wrapped up and sent to Europe in crates stamped with the word Jaffa.”

The three participating writers will also discuss translated literature and its necessity in a world like ours because, citing Adam Thirlwell, “translation is literature’s antidote to the problem that every language has its own policed borders.“
If you want to know more about Orly Castel-Bloom, Menis Koumandareas or Radoje Domanović, rendezvous on October 20 at 4 pm in Marseille.
And finally the new 2014 Finnegan’s List will be presented, yet another list full of insider’s tips.
